Plan G questions

Medicare Supplement Plan G, answered plainly

Straight answers about what Plan G covers, when to buy it and what to know before you switch. Type a word in the search box to find your question fast.

The basics

What is Medicare Supplement Plan G?

Plan G is a Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) policy. It works with Original Medicare, Parts A and B.

Medicare pays its share first. Plan G then helps pay many of the costs that are left, like coinsurance and hospital costs.

Is Plan G the same from every insurance company?

Yes, the benefits are the same. Federal law standardizes Medicare Supplement plans, so a Plan G from one company covers the same things as a Plan G from another.

What can differ is the price, how that price changes over time and the company's customer service.

What does Plan G help pay for?
  • Part A hospital deductible and coinsurance
  • Part B coinsurance (the 20% Medicare doesn't pay)
  • Part B excess charges
  • Skilled nursing facility and hospice coinsurance
  • The first 3 pints of blood
  • Emergency care when traveling abroad, up to plan limits
Does Plan G cover the Part B deductible?

No. You pay the yearly Part B deductible yourself. After you meet it, Plan G helps pay your share of Medicare-approved costs for the rest of the year.

Do I still pay the Part B premium?

Yes. You pay your Part B premium to Medicare and your Plan G premium to the insurance company. The standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month in 2026. For 2027, the Medicare Trustees project about $209.50 a month; Medicare usually announces the official amount in November.

Can I see any doctor I want?

You can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Plan G has no network, and you don't need referrals.

Does Plan G cover dental, vision or hearing?

No. Plan G doesn't include routine dental, vision or hearing care. We can talk with you about separate options for those.

Does one Plan G policy cover my spouse too?

No. Each Medicare Supplement policy covers one person. Spouses each need their own policy.

When to buy

When is the best time to buy Plan G?

During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. It lasts 6 months and starts when your Part B begins, if you're 65 or older.

During this time, an insurance company can't turn you down or charge you more because of your health.

I'm still working at 65. When should I sign up?

It depends on your job coverage and when you start Part B. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins when Part B starts, so the timing of Part B matters.

Call us before you make changes. We'll walk through your dates with you.

What is a guaranteed-issue right?

It's a situation where you can buy certain Supplement plans without answering health questions. One example is when certain employer or other coverage ends.

The rules are specific, so we'll check whether one applies to you.

Switching and prices

Can I switch to a different Plan G company later?

You can often apply. But outside your open enrollment period or a guaranteed-issue situation, you'll usually answer health questions. The insurance company may say no.

Some states have special rules. We'll check yours.

Should I switch if my price went up?

Maybe, maybe not. We'll compare prices and explain the health questions involved. Sometimes staying with your current plan is the right choice, and we'll tell you so.

Don't cancel your current plan until a new one is approved and in place.

Why do prices differ for the same plan?

Each insurance company sets its own prices. Your age, ZIP code and other factors can also affect what you pay.

How can my Plan G price change over time?

Companies use one of three pricing methods:

  • Community-rated: everyone pays the same, regardless of age.
  • Issue-age-rated: based on your age when you buy.
  • Attained-age-rated: based on your current age, so it rises as you get older.

Prices can also change for other reasons, like inflation. We'll tell you which method each company uses.

What about Plan F?

Plan F isn't available to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you were eligible before then, we can compare Plan F and Plan G with you.

Drug coverage

Does Plan G cover prescription drugs?

No. For drug coverage, most people add a separate Medicare Part D plan.

How much could I pay for drugs with a Part D plan?

In 2027, Part D out-of-pocket costs for covered drugs are capped at $2,400 for the year (it was $2,100 in 2026). The most a Part D deductible can be in 2027 is $700.

Premiums and covered drugs vary by plan. We can compare plans for your medications.

Plan G and Medicare Advantage

Can I have Plan G and a Medicare Advantage plan?

No. Medicare Supplement plans only work with Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is a different way to get your Medicare benefits.

You can read about it on our Medicare Advantage page.

How do I choose between them?

It depends on your doctors, travel, budget and health. We explain both and help you see what fits. Our free Turning 65 guide is a good place to start.
